What Does Your CV do?

Question: What is a CV and what’s supposed to do?

Answer: A CV is essentially a medium through which you sell yourself and its function is to get you to interview  -  nothing more nothing less.

Question: What’s the difference between a standard CV and an excellent CV ( by excellent I mean one that instantly makes you an interview candidate ?)

Answer:  A standard CV tells potential employers what you’ve done.   An excellent CV tells employers how well you did it!!

Example – Everyone knows what a Barman does so why bother giving details?

Rather tell them how good a barman you were (Employee of the Month 2 times in a row, took over £5000 in one night – the most in the clubs history).

The best way to do this is to list your employment history and under each one list 3 key achievements for each post.  If you really think it is necessary then include one sentence about your role and responsibility.

E.g.

Barman – Decadence Nightclub  – May – June 2007

·         Employee of the Month 2 times in a row

·         Took most takings in one night (£5000)

·         Responsible for handling  over £20,000 a day.

Start looking at your CV.  Does it tell someone what you’ve done?   Or does it tell them how well you’ve done what you’ve done.  That simple distinction can make the difference between getting to an interview and getting a rejection letter.
